How to Live a More Active Lifestyle
Honestly, since graduating college and starting a full time job, it’s been harder to get enough exercise in. Meetings, projects and phone calls take up the majority of my day and I find myself glued to my desk for long periods of time. I do my best to get up, move around, go for a 10-minute walk, but it’s still such a huge adjustment from college!
When I was in school, I was so used to walking to class, meeting up with friends during the day, going to coffee shops, etc. I was constantly walking around and getting regular exercise. Now, after working a full time job for over two years, I understand the struggle of working a desk job!
But, I don’t let that deter me from getting as much exercise as I can. Sharing my best tips on how to live a more active lifestyle and easy ways to get yourself moving throughout the day below.
Top tips on how to live a more active lifestyle
1. Utilize your lunch hour and breaks you have during the day to get some extra movement in!
This is one of my favorite tips. Whether you have a half hour lunch or a quick ten to fifteen minute break, I recommend using that time to get active and increase your heart rate. Either go on a short walk outside on the sidewalks or trails around your building, walk inside your building (if it’s raining), take advantage of the company gym if your workplace has one, or even take a lunchtime yoga or group fitness class.
Personally, I love to get outside on my lunch break, so I try to go for a 30 minute daily walk every single day. There are different sidewalks and some trails that I go on so I’ll switch up my route, but it’s just such a great way to stay active.
Not only will you burn extra calories by doing this, but you will feel more focused and productive in the afternoon too! Taking breaks to walk is not only beneficial for your physical health, but your mental health too.
2. Take the Stairs
I actually don’t like elevators that much, so I always take the stairs. But, honestly if you’re looking for a simple way to burn more calories and stay active throughout the day, taking the stairs instead of the elevator is one of the easiest changes you can make. You don’t have to carve out extra time out of your day to do it either!
Obviously, if you’re on the 25th floor or a very high level, then taking the stairs might be difficult. In this case, I recommend walking up a few flights and then taking the elevator the rest of the way up. That way you are still getting in some extra exercise.
3. Get up and move at least once every hour
This can be hard for some people who work at a job where they are primarily sitting and have tons of work. Sometimes when you’re focused on a project you just forget to stand up and move around.
But it is SO important to make sure you are moving your body at least once every hour!
This could be going to fill up your water bottle, walking to the restroom, going to chat with a coworker, walking to the cafeteria, really anything that gets you up and moving and stretches your legs. For those of you that have an office, you could even close your door and do a few lunges or push-ups. If you have a standing desk, try utilizing that for a little while.
If you are someone that has a hard time remembering to move around every hour, set a timer on your phone or watch to remind you! This way when it goes off you know that it’s time for you to get up and move.
4. Develop a Weekly Exercise Routine
Developing a weekly workout routine is the best way to get yourself into the habit of working out and moving your body. Once your routine becomes a habit, it’ll be easy for you to stick with it! Your routine can be something as simple as running for 30 minutes every Monday and Wednesday, and strength training every Tuesday and Thursday.
It’s your routine, so you pick the days, the length and the types of workouts you want to do! There are so many health benefits to regular physical activity (lower risk of heart disease, increase energy levels, maintain a healthy weight, lower cholesterol levels, etc.), so find workouts you love to do and stay consistent.
5. Replace your chair with a stability ball
Sitting on an exercise ball instead of a chair has a ton of benefits! It will actually make you stabilize your abs while your sitting, it will improve your posture, and it is going to help relieve back pain!
Personally, I haven’t tried using it yet because I have my sit-to stand desk, so I stand a decent amount of the day, but if that isn’t a option for you, try the exercise ball out and see what you think! It will definitely help you move around more because you will constantly be switching positions and balancing on it without even noticing!
6. Take your phone calls standing/walking
If you have an office, try taking your phone calls standing or pacing in your office. I actually pace back and forth normally when I’m on the phone!
You can also take your phone calls outside. I see so many people on the phone walking outside of the office. It’s an excellent way to get work done while you’re moving!
Even if you’re not at work, and you have to call a relative or make an appointment, try walking outside while you do it! It’s the best way to get extra steps in without even knowing it!
7. Walking/Group Fitness Dates
Instead of meeting friends at a coffee shop or bar, ask if anyone wants to try out some new group fitness classes! You could do barre or cycling or Zumba, etc. Find a class that everyone would enjoy! You could also walk around a neighborhood or on a trail at one of your local parks.
I love getting together with friends and just walking and catching up! When you’re talking with friends, you’ll forget you’re even exercising and you can walk for miles.
Remember every little movement counts! Sneaking in extra physical activity into your everyday activities can really make an impact and increase the number of calories you burn. When you go to the grocery store, make a conscious effort to park further away in the parking lot. When you’re watching TV, during the commercial breaks, get up and do a few ab exercises. There are so many simple ways that you can incorporate more exercise into your schedule without even knowing it!
