Best Bed and Breakfast in Wisconsin: Weekend Recap at Covington Manor – our experience, things to do, where to eat, and more!
If you follow me on Instagram, then you know that a few weekends ago we enjoyed a staycation at Covington Manor, a charming and unique bed and breakfast located in Cambridge, WI. I shared a few photos already, but I wanted to put together a full blog post sharing all the photos from the weekend and highlighting everything we did while we were there.

Looking back on our little getaway, we managed to pack SO many activities into Saturday and Sunday, but somehow it was one of the most relaxing, rejuvenating weekends we’ve had in a long time! We enjoyed a prepared picnic on the lawn (the weather was beautiful on Saturday), drove to Lake Kegonsa State Park for some outdoor adventure, explored downtown Cambridge and did some shopping, relaxed with a spa night Saturday evening and had an incredible gourmet breakfast Sunday morning.
We seriously had THE best time and it was all thanks to LeighAnn, our amazing host. She made sure our stay was absolutely perfect. From the warm hospitality to the personalization of everything, our stay was better than I ever could have imagined.
About Covington Manor
Covington Manor is a traditional bed and breakfast (great for a couples getaway or girls trip) and creative space for small businesses, creatives and individuals to host events, retreats, workshops, bridal showers, murder mystery parties, etc. It’s truly such a versatile space that can be used for a wide variety of gatherings throughout the year!
The beautiful home is owned by LeighAnn Carmody and her husband, who purchased it from the Simon family in 2021. The Manor still has its original hardwood floors, detailed woodwork, and beautiful antiques. It’s stunning!
What differentiates Covington Manor from any other Wisconsin bed and breakfast is that your entire stay is customized and tailored to you. I’ll share more about this below, but the personalization of everything is really what made our stay so fun and memorable!
Location
Covington Manor is located in Cambridge, WI, which is about 25 minutes away from the University-Wisconsin Madison or an hour away from Wisconsin Dells and Devils Lake State Park. We were coming from the Milwaukee Area, so we took I-94 to Johnson Creek, took the exit, and Covington Manor was just another 20 minutes from there. It was such a quick drive!
The Amenities
As soon as we stepped foot inside CM, we felt a sense of calm and comfort. The unique guest rooms are beautifully designed and decorated. And although CM is a historic home, it is filled with the modern amenities such as: luxurious bedding and linens, free Wi-fi, free private parking, air conditioning, private baths, toiletries from Kosa Spa and Retreat and a 24-hour coffee and tea bar.
There are four spacious rooms on the second floor, each designed to feel like a retreat/staycation. You’re provided with spa robes, an aroma diffuser and essential oils, extra pillows and blankets and a sound machine in your room.
We stayed in the Johnson Suite, which is the Master Suite, and it featured a king size bed with Casaluna linens, a tv, electric fireplace, sitting area overlooking the lawn and a private bathroom with a full vanity. There was also a coffee station, with a microwave and mini fridge filled with filtered water right outside the room.
We had such a good night’s sleep that I’m debating on if I should buy the Casaluna sheets for our bed at home. We don’t need new sheets, but they were so comfortable!
You also have 24-hour access to the three rooms on the main floor: The Parlor (for yoga, meditation and quiet activities), The Studio (for arts, crafts and creations), and The Lounge (for gathering, socializing, and watching TV/playing board games).
The Covington Manor Personalized Experience
What makes Covington Manor different from any other Bed and Breakfast you’ll find, is that everything about your stay is tailored to you – the full breakfast, the toiletries, optional add-ons (a prepared picnic on the lawn, a tea party in the dining room, self care spa kits, an afternoon of crafting and more. It really makes for a unique and memorable experience!
Before your stay, LeighAnn will send out a short questionnaire to get to know you and get a better feel for what your plan is while you’re here, what food you’d like to eat, what add-ons you’re interested in, etc. She truly goes above and beyond to make sure you have the most wonderful experience!
After staying here, I can honestly tell you, we had one of the most relaxing and rejuvenating weekends we’ve had in a while! We chose multiple add-on packages to make our experience more personal. We did the prepared picnic, Self Care Spa Kit, Revel DIY Craft set and Cambridge Gift basket – we really wanted the full Covington Manor experience. Everything was just so impressive and well thought out. LeighAnn has such an eye for detail.
When we arrived, the Cambridge gift basket was waiting for us in our suite, along with the Revel DIY craft sets and spa kit. The Cambridge gift basket was so cute and was filled with tons of goodies from local businesses and boutiques. I’ll insert a photo here so you can see everything we received!
Cambridge Gift Basket
We really felt so at home and taken care of here. I have truly never experienced hospitality and customer service quite like this. It was refreshing!
Where to Eat
Millie’s Coffee and Eatery
We ate at Millie’s for lunch on Sunday after doing some shopping at the local boutiques in downtown Cambridge. They’re new to town and offer locally roasted and organic coffee along with homemade breakfast and lunch options. We had their French Toast and oh my goodness, it was SO good! The weather was nice outside too so we ate outside on the patio!
Breakfast at Covington Manor
Breakfast at CM was my favorite meal we ate while we were here! Like I mentioned earlier, before our stay, LeighAnn sent out a questionnaire to get to know us better, and one of the questions asked what we wanted to eat for breakfast, if we had any dietary restrictions, etc.
LeighAnn said she wanted to prepare our dream breakfast for us, so we told her everything we love! Chocolate chip pancakes with whipped cream, hash browns, an assortment of fruit, bacon, sausage… all the best breakfast foods. It was seriously one of the best meals I’ve had! I was so impressed.
For guests that stay at Covington Manor, LeighAnn prepares an AMAZING breakfast using locally sourced ingredients from Cambridge and other Wisconsin based companies. There is also a 24 hour tea and coffee bar in the dining room that you can take advantage of during your stay.

Things to Do (At and Around) Covington Manor
Prepared Picnic
To customize your stay at Covington Manor, there are a number of add-ons you can choose from and a prepared picnic on the lawn is one of them. This is probably one of my favorite things we did! I’m all for a whimsical, Cottagecore picnic and that’s exactly what we got. I packed this beautiful white lace midi dress to wear and it fit the aesthetic perfectly!
As for the food, LeighAnn had filled the picnic basket with locally sourced meat and cheeses, croissants, cinnamon rolls, berries, fruits, chocolates and candies, crackers, even a mini pie! Everything was delicious! It honestly felt like we were in a fairytale.
We talked, laughed, ate A LOT and took a ton of photos. I mean everything was so cute, how could you not!? It’s not often that we take the time to slow down and just enjoy each other, so everything about the picnic was perfect!
Explore Downtown Cambridge
Sunday afternoon, we walked from Covington Manor to downtown Cambridge to stop in some of the local shops and restaurants. It’s such a short walk, only about 5 minutes away!
Cambridge has some really cute local boutiques – detail’s boutique is one of my personal favorites. They have tons of cute and trendy clothes and accessories. Across the way, is Ruby Rose Gallery, and if you’re into earthly gifts and natural gems, you’ll love it! They have beautiful jewelry, minerals and natural home decor.
You can also check out Anew Vintage Dream, the Avid Gardener, and Rowe Pottery.
Revive Salt Room and Sauna
We had a Himalayan salt room session booked for Sunday at Revive, but unfortunately it got cancelled last minute, so we weren’t able to go. I’m so sad! We’ve never done a salt room treatment before, but we were reading about all the wellness and beauty benefits (there are so many) so we definitely plan on coming back.
Revive’s website talks more about dry salt therapy, how it works, and all the benefits, but I’ll list a few here:
- improves skin and slows the aging process
- relieves stress and relaxes the body
- reduces headaches
- removes toxins, allergens and pollutants
- boosts the immune system
Lake Kegonsa State Park
Saturday afternoon, after our picnic, we took the short drive to Lake Kegonsa State Park. It was about 20 minutes away, so not too far. But, if you’re looking for some parks a bit closer, CamRock County Park and Lake Ripley are both within five minutes of Covington Manor. We heard such great things about Lake Kegonsa, so we decided to go there!
They have miles of trails, volleyball courts, playgrounds, a pet swim area, and fishing piers. The lake was absolutely beautiful! When you go there, you can either buy a daily or annual state park pass at the park entrance or online. We bought ours there and it was $8 for the day.
For any outdoor enthusiasts looking for a larger trail system, Devilβs Lake State Park is about an hour away and it’s BEAUTIFUL!
Lake Geneva
If you haven’t been to Lake Geneva before, I highly recommend. It’s an hour drive from CM and there’s so much to do there no matter what time of year you visit. Whether you like shopping, hiking, downhill skiing, spending time at the beach.. there’s something for everyone.
We love walking along Lake Shore Path and admiring all the mansions that overlook the lake. They’re gorgeous! There’s also tons of amazing restaurants you can try.
Cambridge Winery
If we had more time, we would’ve loved to go to Cambridge Winery, but we had two full days of stuff planned and just didn’t make it here. I’ve heard that the wine selection and food is fantastic. Many have said that the winery is great for larger parties or events though.
Overall, we had such a fun and relaxing weekend at Covington Manor and can’t wait to go back at a later date (I already know it’ll be so pretty in the Fall)!
It’s one of the best places to come for a romantic getaway, a slumber party with your girlfriends, or to host an event, bridal shower or wellness retreat. I guarantee you’ll feel right at home. LeighAnn has worked hard to ensure that all guests experience the perfect mix of cozy, comfortable and luxury while staying at CM. You will have a great time for sure!
If you have any questions about our experience or want more recommendations on things to do around the area or other outdoor activities, let me know! I’d love to help!
