Now is the perfect time to get an organizational system in place! Finding a system that works for you and is functional is so important. This will help you keep your home looking organized and clean all the time.
I think you will find this post extremely helpful and beneficial. We tried hard to make these 20 things to declutter different from any other organizing post to give you some new and unique ideas.
So, with that.. LET’S GET ORGANIZED!
20 Things to Declutter Now for an Organized Life
1. Your Paper Pile
Everyone has that one pile for paper that sits on one of the kitchen counters or in your utility room. Take some time to finally go through it and toss all the unnecessary papers. File away everything else!
2. Jewelry Collection
This is a category that gets overlooked way too often! Nobody ever thinks to clean out or organize their jewelry armoire or drawer. Most times we start with our closet, get too overwhelmed and stop haha!
3. Makeup and Skincare
Go through all of the beauty products in your bathroom and toss out any products that are expired, that you don’t use anymore, or that you don’t like.
4. Your Pantry
Next category of things to declutter.. your pantry! This might take a while, so break it down by categories. Maybe tackle the snacks first, then you go on to condiment packets, then your fridge, etc. Get rid of anything old or expired.
5. Top drawer of your nightstand
Does anyone else’s top drawer get filled with random things that you just throw in there because you don’t know where else it should go? Take some time to go through the items in this drawer and find a home for them.
6. Kitchen Utensil Drawer
I’m sure you have so many old, scraped up and dirty kitchen utensils that you don’t use anymore. Get rid of those and only keep the utensils that you will actually use. This goes for pots and pans too.. but tackle that on a different day!
7. Collection of pens/pencils
I feel like pens and pencils just accumulate so quickly. They’re in your drawers, in backpacks, in your desk, on the counter.. They’re just everywhere! Go through and get rid of any that are out of ink or you know you won’t use anymore. You can even include markers in this category too. Toss any that are dried out and don’t write anymore.
8. Bathroom Towels and Washcloths
When was the last time you went through your towels and washcloths you have stacked up in your bathroom? Take them all out of the cabinet, toss (or repurpose) any ones that are ripped or have stains that won’t come out.
9. Your Shoe Collection
This might be the hardest category of things to declutter! Personally I have the hardest time getting rid of ANY of my shoes, even if I don’t wear them. I’m sure I’m not the only one with this problem!
When you’re going through your shoe collection, be honest with yourself and answer the following questions: Do they still fit? Will I wear these again? Are they comfortable? If you answered no to any of these, get rid of them.
10. Your Camera Roll on your phone
Make it a goal to clear up XX amount of space on your phone and actually do it! You can even upload your photos to Google Photos for free. I keep the Google Photos app on my phone so I can still look through any photos/videos when I want to.
11. Your Game Cabinet
You probably have so many board games that you don’t play anymore, that are missing pieces, or are just in terrible shape. Take out all your games, sort them into piles (keep, donate, toss) and organize them as you put the games you’re keeping back into the closet.
12. Your Email Account
This one might take some time! Unsubscribe from any emails that you don’t want to receive anymore and then create folders for incoming emails. I definitely recommend making a folder labeled “Receipts” and filing away any of your online orders/transactions in here. This way if you have to return something or need to look back at the receipt of something you ordered, you know where to find it!
13. Old Books
Any books you don’t love anymore or are just too old and you won’t read again, donate them. Take them to your local library or give them to a neighbor or friend.
14. Your desk at home
Our home office desks can get pretty messy. Tons of papers, notebooks, and random things that get left on the desk or in the drawers. If you don’t have a desk organization system in place; buy a few filing compartments and desk organizing trays to solve this problem!
15. The inside of your car
If needed, this task can be broken up into a few days! Maybe one day you clear everything out of your car and vacuum it. Next day, go through all of the things you took out and put them away where they actually go. Or even just start by organizing the trunk, then the back seat, then the driver’s seat, etc. Whatever works for you.
16. Your Cleaning Products
I’m going to guess all your cleaning products are just shoved under your kitchen or bathroom counter with no sort of organization system in place. Take all your products out, organize them into categories and put them back either in baskets or bins or another storage container that you have. You can get cheap organizational bins off Amazon or from the Container store if necessary!
17. Your Budgeting Sheet
Whether you keep track of your expenses and income through an app, in an excel sheet, or maybe you don’t have a budgeting system yet. Now is the perfect time to organize or find a system that is simple and works for you.
Here’s the exact budgeting template I use that’s allowed me to pay off over $38,000 of debt and counting. This budgeting template will allow you to visually see the purchases you’ve made, track your monthly bills and debt, analyze your monthly and yearly income and expenses and more!
18. T-shirt Drawer
Toss any t-shirts that are too small for you, that are ripped, that have holes or are stained. I’m sure you have a lot of old middle/high school sports t-shirts you could get rid of as well haha! Only keep the ones that you know you will wear and that have true sentimental value to you.
19. Your Craft Drawer or Area
The craft section of any house tends to get pretty messy sometimes! If you have the space, storage bins and containers work great to organize all your craft supplies and utensils. This will ensure every marker, pen, pencil, etc. has a home!
20. Your Purse
No matter how many times I clean out my purse, it always gets messy within a week. Take some time to go through it and find different pockets for all the items you regularly keep in there.
Tackle one of these categories each day! Organizing and decluttering is much more manageable when you break it down and focus on one category or area at a time.
When you have too many things to declutter at once, it can get overwhelming. Take it easy and celebrate the small wins of organizing each space!

What are you going to organize first!?
This is great list to get started with for the Spring cleaning season! I know my craft area will take a little time to get thru.
I know organizing and cleaning definitely takes time! Just break up your craft area into sections and try doing it day by day!
Oohhh I love decluttering. One I find really hard to declutter is my email (besides the spam) and photos on my phone!
I struggle with my email and photos on my phone the most too! It’s so hard to delete things!
I’m on my decluttering journey, so found this post really helpful!
Yay! I’m glad. I know I love reading organizing posts!
Wow! Jewelry and top drawer of nightstand! I never think to declutter those!! Thanks!!
I know those are two areas that always get left behind! I just recently did my jewelry and it felt so good to get an organization system down!
Yes I need to do this!
These decluttering ideas were very helpful because I honestly tend to forget about cleaning out my jewelry, makeup or tshirt collections, but I need to do so periodically. Thanks for the reminder.
