How to Achieve your 2019 Goals

Hi Everyone! Hope you all are having a relaxing Sunday! Since we are already 2 weeks into 2019 I thought it would be a good idea to share some of my tips for achieving the New Years Resolutions you set for yourself this year! I know for me personally, every year I set high expectations for myself and the things I want to accomplish. Sometimes I’m able to achieve the majority of my goals and sometimes I don’t follow through with all of them.

There are a few reasons why some of my goals never get met and it’s usually because I try to accomplish too many at once or I don’t set actionable intentions. These were key mistakes that were stopping me from achieving what I wanted to. When I finally realized that I neededΒ to adjust how I was setting my goals and how I was going about achieving them, I was able to accomplish a lot more!

So today I am going to share with you some tips on how you can achieve all the goals that you set for 2019!

Enjoy!

*Write down your Goals*

I find that when I actually list out my goals on paper or even on my phone I am more likely to follow through with them. I have a google doc of my 2019 resolutions, a Trello board, a saved list in the Wunderlist app on my phone, and have them written out in a notebook! I have them everywhere so that I am constantly reminded of them! I would suggest typing out your goals, printing them, and then keeping your list of resolutions on your desk, dresser, or somewhere where you will see them every day! You could even put your goals on your kitchen fridge so that every time you go into the kitchen you will see the goals you set for yourself!

*Focus on 1-2 Main Goals*

Choosing only a few goals to focus on for the year allows you to dedicate more time and energy into accomplishing them. You are more likely to follow through with the one to two goals that you set for yourself vs trying to accomplish 10 resolutions. If you set too many for yourself it can be overwhelming, stressful, and time consuming. Most likely you will give up on trying to complete them because there are just too many to focus on. Narrow down what you really want to achieve and it will be so much easier to manage!

*Make sure your Goals are Actionable*

This is so important! One of the problems I used to run into when writing down my New Year Resolutions making my goals too general and with no action in mind. They were worded like- Lose Weight, Eat Healthier, Be Kinder. When I worded my goals like that, I wasn’t as motivated to follow through with them because I didn’t know exactly what I was trying to achieve.

If your goal is to Lose Weight, does losing weight mean losing 5 pounds and you’ll be happy or does it mean losing 20? You need to be specific. To do this, word your goals with an action in mind- Lose 25 pounds, eat one banana every day, say one compliment to a stranger a day, etc. See the difference? Just by simply rephrasing how you word your goal can make such a difference. This allows you to actually act on it. Each day you can make sure that you, in this instance, complimented someone you didn’t know or ate that fruit that you were suppossed to! Try this and see what a difference it makes!

*Break down the goals by Month and Week*

Breaking down your goals gives you a plan for HOW you are going to achieve your goal. Without a plan, accomplishing your resolutions can be difficult! For example if your main goal is to lose 40 pounds by the end of the year. Think about trying to lose 20 in 6 months, or 10 pounds in 3 months. And then start thinking about how you are going to do that.

Obviously, if you do not change anything about your current lifestyle, you are not going to accomplish your goal, so what you need to do is set other mini goals. Maybe it’s cutting out certain desserts, working out every day for 30 minutes, going to a group fitness class 4 times a week, you choose! But you will need to figure out how you are going to achieve the goal.

Your plan may look something like this-

2019 Resolution- Lose 40 pounds

3 month goal- Lose 10 pounds

Weekly goals- Work out every day for 30 minutes. Stop eating after 8pm on week nights.

With these mini goals you will be able to work towards the larger goal you set for yourself!

The reason why most people fail or just give up on their New Year Resolutions is because they will set a goal for themself, but they don’t lay out how they are going to achieve it. By mapping out exactly how you plan to achieve your main goal, you will be more likely to follow through and succeed in accomplishing your New Year Resolution!

*Measure your Progress*

Maybe it’s every week, every other week, or every month that you check up on your progress of your goal. This will ensure that you’re not falling behind and that you are on your way to accomplishing your goal! I try and track my progress every week and evaluate how I have been doing and what I can do to improve! Checking in on yourself is so important when you are working towards a goal!! It will allow you to reflect on what has been difficult for you and how you can make changes in your daily, weekly, or monthly habits to make achieving your goal easier!

I hope these tips will help you and motivate you to accomplish all the goals you set for yourself this year!
