How to Get Silky Hair Overnight in 8 Steps

1. Reduce the amount of heat used on hair

Styling your hair on a regular basis with hot tools can cause some serious hair damage. So you want to minimize your hot tool usage as much as possible. I usually straighten my hair twice a week at the most.

If you’re going to use heat on your hair, it’s a good idea to always use a heat protectant. Made with Argan Oil and Coconut Oil, Briogeo’s Farewell Frizz Heat Protectant Cream is great for straight, wavy or curly hair and provides essential fatty acids to help fight frizz and dryness while smoothing your hair.

2. Rinse Hair in Cold Water

Rinsing with cool water helps your hair cuticles stay closed. It helps seal in moisture and preserve the natural oils in your hair to keep it hydrated, straight and smooth! Rinsing with hot water on the other hand, opens your hair follicles and cuticles, which can strip your natural hair oils and cause your hair to be more frizzy and dry. Not good!

The warm water can also make your hair more brittle and cause split ends and breakage.

3. Don’t Rub Hair with a Towel

I know how tempting it is to step out of the shower and rub your hair with a towel to get all the excess water off. Do not do this! Your hair is super fragile when it’s wet, so rubbing it with a towel is going to promote breakage, split ends and lots of frizz.

Instead, use a microfiber towel to gently dab or blot your hair in sections to remove extra water! You can also use one of these super absorbent microfiber hair wraps to dry your hair quickly without any heat – they’re great for any hair type!

4. If you can, let your hair air-dry after you shower

Want silky hair overnight? One of the best things you can do is let you hair air dry after you take a shower. Using heat on wet hair is especially damaging and can cause your hair to frizz up. I know sometimes you can’t always let your hair air dry, so if you do blow dry, use the lowest heat setting and keep moving the dryer around your hair to minimize any damage.

Also – if you’re going to use a hair dryer, just make sure your aiming the dryer down at your hair. This is another way to prevent frizzy hair!

5. Sleep on a Silk Pillowcase

Sleeping on pure silk has so many hair, skin and beauty benefits! For one, silk pillowcases are much softer and smoother than traditional cotton pillowcases, so they help to reduce frizz and hair breakage. Silk also helps reduce skin creasing and wrinkles as you move around throughout the night. So, now you can wake up with beautiful skin and gorgeous hair every morning!

If you’re curious how satin pillowcases compares to silk or even cotton, I found this post that does a great job at explaining the key differences.

6. Use a Wide-Tooth Comb on Wet Hair

It’s best to use a wide-tooth comb like this one on wet hair! It helps prevent breakage and split ends while also detangling your hair. After I spray my leave-in conditioner on my hair, I gently comb through my hair with my wide-tooth comb, starting at the bottom and making my way up.

When brushing, the best way to reduce breakage, damage and frizz is to brush your hair from the bottom up! I see so many people brushing their hair from the top down and it drives me crazy.

7. Use a Hair Mask Weekly

Hair masks work wonders on your hair. I typically use this mask once a week and my hair always feels super moisturized and soft after I use it! If you are struggling with your hair frizzing up in the summer, I definitely recommend adding a hair mask into your routine.

Also, if you didn’t know this already, using Castor Oil on your hair has so many benefits! It promotes healthy hair growth, it’s super moisturizing hydrating and great at taming frizz. So if you have dry, damaged or brittle hair, this oil is amazing! Just make sure you wash ALL of it out.

8. Get Your Hair Trimmed Often!

Does anyone else get really nervous when they have to get their hair cut? Or even when you have to go in for a trim? It always makes me so nervous haha! But, regular trims are so great for your hair! You’ll get all the dead ends of your hair removed, you’ll have less flyaways and breakage and your hair will grow faster!

I usually go in for a trim every 6 months which is a bit longer than recommended. Normally, it’s recommended to go in every 3-4 months or so.

Beautopia Hair Supersilk Pure Indulgence Shampoo

If you’re looking to achieve that frizz-free, silky, shiny, smooth hair look – I recommend a sulfate-free shampoo like Beautopia’s Supersilk Indulgence. It’s the best at taming frizz and controlling your rough hair. Plus it has a really luxurious feel!

Beautopia Hair Supersilk Pure Indulgence Conditioner

Finish off with the matching Supersilk smoothing and moisturizing conditioner! I’m obsessed with this conditioner. It makes your hair SO soft! Paraben free, sulfate free and color safe.

I have the Supersilk travel kit which includes both the shampoo and conditioner along with the Leave In Treatment. Oh my gosh. So good! These three hair products combined are the best at fighting frizz and leaving you with hydrated, soft hair!

It’s a 10 Miracle Leave-In Plus Keratin

First off, this deep conditioner smells AMAZING. Like SO good. I’ve been using this since college and it’s truly one of the best. When I get out of the shower, I spritz it all over my damp hair, focusing on the bottom half and the ends of my hair. For $20, I wish the bottle was a little bigger, but it’s lasted me almost two years, so I definitely think it’s worth it.

This leave-in detangles + de-frizzes your hair, acts as a heat-protectant spray, protects your natural keratin, restores hydration, and seals the hair cuticle for strong, smooth and healthy hair!

Trader Joe’s Shea Butter & Coconut Oil Hair Mask

One of THE best hair masks I’ve found. Plus, you can’t beat the price! It’s infused with Vitamin E and leaves your hair feeling super hydrated, moisturized and soft. I have pretty thin and typically dry hair and this mask makes such a difference!

If your dry and dull hair in need of some real TLC, this overnight hair mask by KERASTASE is what you need. You apply it to damp hair right before bed, working it through the length of your hair + ends, and will wake up the next morning with smoother, softer hair. It’s magic and absorbs quickly into your hair so it doesn’t leave behind any residue on your pillowcase!

Revlon One-Step Hair Dryer And Volumizer Hot Air Brush

I got this hair dryer as a gift a few years ago and I’m just as obsessed with it now! It dries your hair in half the time a normal blow dryer does, gives you volume and lift at your roots and makes your hair soft and shiny.

There’s two heat settings and a cooling feature. I always use the lowest heat setting and then finish with the cool setting!

VIBRASTRAIT 1.5″ Vibrating Flat Iron

Known as the “healthier hair straightener,” the VIBRASTRAIT iron vibrates as you straighten your hair to evenly distribute heat, lock in moisture and fight frizz. I actually own two of these – the 1.5″ flat iron and the 1″, they’re so good!

My hair is significantly less frizzy after using these flat irons!
