Simple Ways to Switch to Non-Toxic Products!

Want to start living a toxin free lifestyle, but don’t know where to start? In this post, I’m sharing my top tips on how you can switch to non-toxic products easily!

It’s been proven that our constant exposure to the toxic chemicals found in our environment, our food, the personal care products we use, the air we breathe, and the makeup we wear can be linked to serious health illnesses down the line. Cancer, infertility, Alzheimer’s disease, breast cancer, and birth defects, just to name a few.

One way to eliminate some of our exposure to toxic chemicals is by making mindful choices about the products we use in our daily lives! For the past year and a half, I’ve been trying to transition to more of a “clean” lifestyle. It’s definitely been challenging, but totally worth it!

There are so many products that I would’ve never thought would be so bad for us! In this post, I’m going to share with you a few (very simple) ways you can transition to nontoxic and clean products too!

Non-toxic products

When you first decide to make the switch to clean/non-toxic products it can be VERY overwhelming and hard to know where to begin. There are so many products on the market and figuring out which ones are good for you can be really difficult! Trust me, I’ve been there!

You may even feel like you want to grab the trash can and toss all your current products away after you learn how bad they probably are. Just wait!! Don’t do that yet. Instead, read the simple steps I have listed below to help you swap out your current products to cleaner alternatives!

Here are three simple tips to make switching to non-toxic products easier!

Educate Yourself

Before you start tossing all the products that you have been using up to this point, make sure you have all the information you need. Not all of the products you are currently using may be toxic, so do your research. I recommend downloading the EWG Skin Deep app and searching for the products you use in the database.

When you type in a product, you will receive a rating for the product on a scale of 1-10 (1 being the best and 10 being the worst) along with a list of the individual ingredients that make up the product.

Understanding the reason behind using safer and non-toxic products is the first step in making the switch to cleaner alternatives! Before you make any major changes in your life (no matter what it is) make sure you’re well-informed!

Take some time to read more about those ingredients. Learn the effects that each one has on your body in the short term and long term. Learn which ingredients are found in different products. And learn how to actually read a product label so you can be aware of and avoid those ingredients.

Start by swapping out one product at a time

Now that you understand why using nontoxic products is so important, you have to figure out where to even begin! I recommend swapping out one product at a time. Choose one that you use very frequently or even daily! and buy a cleaner, safer version of it!

I would suggest starting with one of you skincare products; your moisturizer, night cream, lotion, body cream, etc. I suggest these because they sit on your skin for long periods of time. Think about that! When you apply your skin products all of them melt right into your skin. You want to make sure that the ingredients that are sinking in are actually good for you and not harming your health.

One of my favorite moisturizers is Beautycounter’s Adaptive Moisture Lotion. It’s so hydrating and smells reallly good! It feels even better going on my skin just knowing that the ingredients are sustainably sourced and good for me!

Replace your products with cleaner alternatives as they run out

This is one of the easiest ways to switch over to cleaner products. When you run out of a specific makeup, skincare, cleaning, or household product, instead of buying the same one, look for a cleaner, non-toxic, and environmentally friendly version of it!

This way, you were going to spend the money anyway, and now you have a safer product and you are increasing your clean beauty or household products collection!

Have you started to make the switch to safer products?

Great advice! I have seen a lot of people say that they wish they could change over but ‘it’s too expensive’, but they are often trying to switch everything at once which simply isn’t reasonable. Switching over one product at a time is MUCH more reasonable!

    • Yes I agree! When people start learning about clean beauty they usually want to make the switch immediately, but it’s just not reasonable. It is so much easier to switch over gradually and swap out products as they run out! 😊

  3. These tips are great! I’m also currently reading The Nature of Beauty by Imelda Burke, which I definitely recommend. It’s helping me to educate myself on cosmetics and how they affect your body and the environment. Thoroughly recommend!
