The Rug Collective Review – Best Liquid Proof, Washable Area Rug

If you follow me on Instagram, then you know we recently got a new washable rug from The Rug Collective! We had been wanting a large area rug for our living room that was pet-friendly and didn’t stain easily. So, when we came across The Rug Collective and their liquid proof rugs, we knew we had to test them out to see if they were actually worth it!

In this post, I’m going to share our honest review of The Rug Collective and their collection of rugs: the features, the fabric, pricing, design, assembly, how they holds up to liquid spills, how they compare to competitor rug brands and more. If you’ve been curious about these rugs, keep reading!

Features of Rug Collective Rugs

When we first started shopping for the perfect rug, we had just brought home our golden retriever puppy, so we knew we wanted something that was high quality, easy to clean, and machine-washable. It had to be able to withstand mud, excess dirt, accidents and pet hair.

While shopping online, we came across The Rug Collective and their machine washable, wipe clean rugs. Seriously, I was blown away by all the features! The main selling point for us was that the rugs are treated with nanoWipe protection making them 100% liquid proof. This means that any liquid spilled on the rug does not absorb, but instead rolls off the surface of the rug and can be wiped clean with a towel. What a game changer!

We were finding a lot of rugs that were machine washable, but none had the same wipe-clean ability, which was the most appealing aspect.

Features of their rugs:

  • 100% liquid proof and stain resistant
  • Water resistant
  • Machine washable
  • Wipe-clean ability
  • Kid & Pet friendly
  • Sustainably made (from recycled cotton)
  • Treated with Fur-friendly (reduces allergens from pet fur, dust mites and pollen)

I also wanted to make a note that the cushioned rug pad is recommended, but sold separately.

Rug Assembly

The rug arrived in a small/medium sized square box, which I was easily able to carry inside myself. It wasn’t heavy at all! The rug came folded in the box and once you got it out, you could simply lay it down in your desired room and un-fold it. So simple!

One of my favorite aspects about the rug is that there were no creases or wrinkles after un-folding it. We’ve had previous rugs where it’s taken weeks to get all the creases out. So, we were VERY happy about that. Click here to see the video of me unfolding and setting up our new rug in our family room!

Rug Fabric

When we first got the rug out of the box and unrolled it, I was surprised at how the fabric felt. I still don’t know how to describe it! It has more of a sturdy, durable feel to it – which makes sense since it’s liquid and stain proof. It’s a well-made, high quality rug, but to be honest, I was hoping for something a bit softer.

After a few days, we fell in love with it though! For high-traffic areas like the living room, a sturdy, durable rug is what we need. It also lays completely flat, without any creases or wrinkles. And, the ends do not curl up.

How Does it Hold Up to Spills?

I am SHOCKED at how easy this rug makes it to clean up spills! Seriously, having this rug relieves SO much stress in my everyday life.

Before we knew about these rugs, we had a beige and white rug in our living room (one that wasn’t pet-friendly or machine washable. Every time we had guests over, I was so scared that someone was going to spill something on it! Honestly, I felt like I couldn’t fully enjoy myself because I was always trying to making sure nobody was going to spill their drink.

Now that we have our new rug, I am almost begging people to spill something, just so I can show them how easy it is to clean up. I’ll share some photos below to show you how the liquid beads together. Instead of absorbing, the liquid sits on top of the surface of the rug.

Here is a glass of orange juice! You can tell how the liquid sits on the surface without absorbing.

You simply grab a towel and wipe the juice up, with absolutely zero stainings.

This photo was taken right after I wiped up the orange juice. You can see that the spill didn’t absorb or stain the rug!

Sizing, Pricing and Design

They offer a variety of different sizes, rug styles, designs and price points. We ended up going with their best seller, the Distressed Vintage Kendra Ash Area Rug because we loved the beautiful colors and the versatility of it! For right now, we have it in our living area, but because it’s a neutral rug, we could also use it in our bedroom or dining room in the future.

Size wise, the area rugs go up to a 9×12. Runners and round rugs are also available. The round rug sizes are either 6′ or 8′ and the runner rugs go up to a 2’6″x16’4.” I also want to note that these rugs are designed to be used indoors only. If you’re looking for outdoor rugs, I’d probably look somewhere else!

In terms of prints and patterns, there are a variety of different designs to choose from: Contemporary, Tribal/Moroccan, Vintage Crown and Solid colors. The designs are absolutely beautiful, however, the selection isn’t huge. If you’re looking for more solid colored, modern rugs, there aren’t too many to choose from. Hopefully in the future, they keep expanding the variety!

Price wise, I think the rugs are priced very fair, considering all the features they have. They’re obviously not the cheapest, but you truly get what you pay for! These are extremely well-made, durable rugs that are great for pet owners and families with kids. The rugs alone aren’t that pricey, but it is recommended to purchase a rug pad, which ranges from $29-$85, which adds an extra cost to the rug.

Best Rooms to Put your Rug

After having our Rug Collective rug for a few months now, I highly recommend using them in a high traffic area in your home. Or for rooms where the most spills are likely to happen. Your living room or dining room would be great!

We set up ours in the living room, because that’s where we spend the most time hanging out, entertaining friends and family and playing with our puppy. And let me tell you, having this rug has relieved so much stress when it comes to spills.

Without a doubt, accidents and spills are bound to happen. Someone’s drinking a glass of red wine and accidentally spills it. Your dog has an accident on the rug. Your child bumps you and you spill your cup of coffee. With Rug Collective rugs, since they are 100% liquid proof, you don’t have to stress about any of these situations. The liquid beads up so that you can grab a towel and wipe it clean without the liquid absorbing into the rug!

How Does it Compare to Other Rugs?

I’ve had a few questions on how this rug compares to Ruggable rugs and other machine washable rug brands. Honestly, we’ve never ordered any rugs from Ruggable before, so it’s hard for me to compare the two. However, I will say that after looking at rugs on both sites, I’ve noticed that Ruggable offers a wider selections of patterns and prints. Both brands offer unique designs, with a wide variety of colors, but at this time, Ruggable has more options.

Another big difference is that Ruggable rugs come in two pieces, and you need to purchase both. The first piece is the the rug cover (this is the top layer – the part that you actually see) and the second is the non-slip rug pad (the bottom layer – the part that touches the floor). The two pieces attach to one another, and when you spill something on a Ruggable rug, you remove the rug cover and throw it in the washing machine to remove the stain.

When you spill something on The Rug Collective rug, the liquid beads up so you can grab a towel and wipe it clean without the liquid absorbing into the rug. This means you won’t have to continually wash your rug every time someone spills something on it!

They are machine-washable rugs though, so if you absolutely need to wash them, you totally can (in cold water on the delicate setting). But, when washing it make sure you don’t use any harsh chemicals or fabric softeners on the rug to prevent color fading and preserve the nanoWipe protection!

Why We Chose The Rug Collective Rug

After comparing a few different rug brands and the features they offered, we found that The Rug Collective rugs had everything we were looking for (and more). We love that it’s low maintenance, we don’t have to wash our rug every time that someone spills something. It’s so easy and convenient to clean up any accidents or spills. I also love that I don’t have to stress out about having friends and family over. We can just enjoy ourselves without the worry that someone is going to stain our rug.

Plus, with having a Golden Retriever, there’s A LOT of hair. So the fact that all their rugs are treated with Fur-friendly to help reduce allergens in the home is an added bonus.
